Night is safe. Night is free.
The world is a very different place at night. Most people disappear into their homes, and with it they take the noise and the energy of the daytime. I find the night to be extremely comforting. The expectations of the day feel far away, left beyond the horizon with the sun. In the night I feel free to be by myself, to do what I want to do. Time feels abundant, almost infinite. Nowhere to go, no one to please.
In this freedom I can wander, observe, linger. The darkness changes everything, things look different and new, even more beautiful and special. Scenes that exist only in movies and dreams are revealed in the artificial glow of streetlights and storefronts. My photographs attempt to preserve that feeling of quiet observation, to stretch it into infinity.
I do not predetermine what I am looking to find when I make these photos. Rather, I wander, enjoying the exploration of the world at night. I am not looking for any particular location or subject, but I delight in the familiar feeling of discovering a scene.
Inspired by the filmic qualities of Gregory Crewdson’s work, as well as the everyday familiarity that is central to Todd Hido’s photographs, my photos question the settings we know so well.
